Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long have you been shooting weddings? How many have you photographed?

A: I photographed my first wedding in 2009 and have had the pleasure to play a part in over 300 weddings since then. You might say I have some experience.

Q: Do you work with LGBTQ couples?

A: YES. Love is love :)

Q: What kind of equipment do you have?

A: I shoot with Nikon professional equipment. I use two D850 bodies on wedding days and an assortment of Nikkor lenses which change depending on location and the feel I am going for with the images. I also have lighting equipment at my disposal if the venue or shoot requires it. If you are a gear head I can give you a list of what I use.

Q: Are you insured?

A: Yes. All of my equipment is insured and I have $1 million in liability insurance.

Q: Do you travel?

A: Absolutely! I have been fortunate enough to photograph couples all over Michigan and have been flown as far away as Jamaica to shoot. Like most people I love to travel, so if your event is not in the Detroit area, shoot me a message and I can come up with a custom quote for you.

Q: Why should we hire you?

A: Aside from the quality of the photographs I like to think I create a fun atmosphere while shooting. My couples have told me that I have a calming influence, which is great during a crazy day, and that I can make them comfortable in front of the camera. Most people I photograph aren’t models which means it is my job to make you comfortable in front of the camera. I think it is something I am pretty good at.

Q: Do you require a deposit? When is the final balance due?

A: Yes. I require 50% at the signing of the contract with the remaining balance due 30 days prior to the event.

Q: What types of payments do you accept?

A: I accept personal check as well as credit cards through Venmo.

Q: How soon should we book you?

A: As soon as possible! It isn’t uncommon for couples to book me 12-18 months prior to a wedding day and I have booked weddings 1-2 months prior to their date. The chances I am available increase the sooner you reach out.

Q: When will the photographs be done? How many will we receive?

A: Every wedding is different but I typically deliver close to 1000 images from a full day of shooting. Delivery typically takes between 1-2 months after a wedding date and fluctuates based on my workload at any given time during wedding season. A January wedding will get out the door faster than an August wedding.

Q: Do we get black and white versions of the photographs? Do we have to choose which images are in black and white?

A: You will receive a black and white version of each image. No need to pick and choose, you get them all!

Q: Should we add a second shooter?

A: It depends on the scope of the wedding as well as the logistics. I shoot most of my wedding alone and I am perfectly capable of doing so, but if you and your partner are getting ready in different locations, it could be tough for me to photograph both of you in the morning. A second shooter helps with that. I am happy to chat with you about that to see if a second shooter is a good option for you.

Q: How long do you need for our portraits and the wedding party photographs?

A: The more time the better but it really depends on variables like the size of your wedding party and the locations you want to utilize. Two hours seems to be the sweet spot but we can make your schedule work regardless.

Q: Should we hire a planner? Will you help plan things?

A: Planners can be invaluable and I know some great ones if you would like recommendations. Even using one for “day of” planning can help the day run more smoothly. I don’t do any planning myself but I tend to wear many hats on a wedding day. I am always mindful of the timeline and work with planners on making sure everything goes according to plan.

Q: Do we own our photographs?

A: Yes! You own the images and receive a print release with the photographs so you can print them wherever you would like. I do own some rights to the images as well for promotional use. I will never sell your images and if you have any issues with them being displayed we can work something out.

Q: Do you do video?

A: I do not. I can recommend some great videographers though.

Q: Do you shoot film?

A: Unfortunately I do not. Film would actually hamper my process on a wedding day and ultimately limit what you receive.

Q: Do you offer a photo booth at weddings?

A: At this time I do not but it is definitely on my radar. Photo booths are a lot of fun and a great way to assure you get an image of most guests at your wedding.

Q: Do you have reviews?

A: Yes! I have some testimonials in the “Praise” section of this website and have even more on my Knot listing.

Q: Do you do image retouching? Is that included?

A: Each image you receive has been edited to some extent for color, exposure, contrast etc. More extensive editing can be done for a hourly rate but those instances are rare.

Q: Can we have the RAW images?

A: RAW images can only be viewed and processed with certain image software. I only like to provide a final, edited product so I typically don’t provide RAW images. I have photographed other photographers and creatives in the past who have wanted them and I’ve provided them for a fee of $1200.

Q: Can we extend coverage during the reception?

A: Yes. You can extend coverage whenever you like. Coverage extended the day of the wedding though is $600/hour for a single shooter and $700/hour if you want a second shooter to stay as well.

Q: Who chooses the images for our album?

A: Both of us. I always ask my couples to look through their images and pick their favorites that they want included in the book. From there I tend to choose images to fill in the gaps and tell the story of your day. You can have as much input or as little input as you like in the design process.

Q: Will YOU be photographing our wedding?

A: YES! Detroit is for Lovers is just me and I like to provide hands-on service. I photograph all of my weddings.

Q: What happens if you get sick on our wedding day?

A: I have never been too sick to shoot a wedding. (Knock on wood) With that said I am part of a really great local network of wedding photographers who all look out for one another. If anything was to happen there would be plenty of great options to fill in and I would do all I can to aid that process.

These are just a handful of the most common questions I receive. Feel free to ask more!
